Senior Backend Engineer, Payments

About the role
You'll own the services that move money through our corridors — from ledger correctness to settlement reliability. Success in your first year looks like a payments core the whole company trusts: every transfer traceable, every edge case handled, and on-call that's quiet because the system is.
What you'll do
- Design and build the payment orchestration and ledger services our corridors run on
- Set the bar for idempotency, reconciliation and auditability across the payments stack
- Work with Compliance and Operations on how the system enforces regulatory rules
- Review code, mentor engineers and write up the decisions behind the architecture
What you'll bring
- 5+ years building backend systems, ideally around money, ledgers or other high-integrity data
- Strong with a typed backend language (TypeScript, Go, Kotlin or similar) and relational databases
- Comfortable owning a service end to end — design, deployment, on-call and incident reviews
- Clear written communication; you'll often explain trade-offs to non-engineers
Nice to have
- Experience with payment rails, FX or banking integrations in African markets
- Familiarity with event-driven systems and double-entry accounting
What we offer
Paid leave, health cover, pension and life insurance, a learning budget, flexible working and the kit you need from day one. See all the perks of the job.
